Patanjali Yoga Sutras are the foundation of yoga. It provides a practical way for achieving happiness, peace, and freedom. The sutra’s introduction gives an overview of the goal, the obstacles to achieving that goal, and how to overcome them to achieve that goal.

The sutra is made up of 196 stanzas which are organized into four chapters or books

The first verse of the first chapter states: “Now I shall tell you briefly what yoga is”, followed by another 14 down-to-earth verses. It covers the purpose of practicing yoga, its origins, its goal, and how to achieve it.
